The UK's carbon capture and storage (CCS) program is a prime example of how government policy can be shaped by powerful interests, resulting in a costly and ineffective solution to climate change. The program, which has been touted as essential for cutting carbon emissions, is in fact a massive waste of public funds, with a projected cost of £264 billion. This figure, which is more than a quarter of a trillion, will be divided between the public and private sectors, with the public bearing the brunt of the burden. The government's commitment to this program is deeply concerning, given the long history of CCS projects failing to deliver on their promises. The Climate Change Committee's claim that CCS is limited to sectors with few alternatives is simply untrue, as the data shows that only a small percentage of CCS deployment in the UK will be used to address emissions in industrial sectors. Instead, the program will be attached to new fossil fuel-burning power stations, wood-burning power stations, and hydrogen production from fossil gas, which will actually increase emissions. The real aim of the program, it seems, is to provide a gigantic, publicly funded reason for the fossil fuel industry to stay in business. The lead operator of the government's first CCS cluster is BP, the same company that shaped the scientific credibility of CCS as a climate solution. This is a clear example of how powerful interests can shape government policy to serve their own interests, rather than the public good. The wasted money, the lost years, and the lost lives are a stark reminder of the need for a more transparent and accountable approach to climate policy. In my opinion, the UK government should be ashamed of its role in this fiasco, and should immediately cancel the CCS program to avoid further harm to the public and the environment. The money could be clawed back and used to support more effective and sustainable solutions to climate change, such as scaling up renewables and battery storage. This would not only reduce emissions but also lower energy bills for the public. The UK has a chance to lead the way in the transition to a low-carbon economy, but it must do so in a way that is transparent, accountable, and in the best interest of the public.
